Moo to Ewe
Volunteer Work
Moo to Ewe Sanctuary
I had the privilege of volunteering at Moo to Ewe, an incredible animal sanctuary dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating farm animals saved from slaughter. During my time there, I cared for a range of animals, each with their own personalities, quirks, and stories.
Earlier this year, I paused my volunteer work to focus on my studies, but I still hold a deep admiration for the sanctuary and the incredible work they do. Their commitment to giving these animals a second chance is truly inspiring, and I wanted to include this experience on my website to highlight the compassion and purpose behind their mission.
Caring for Cows
Spending time with the cows was where I felt most at home. These gentle giants were calm, curious, and full of character. My responsibilities involved feeding, brushing (my favourite activity ever), and assisting with general care routines, but the real reward came from simply being around them. Each cow had its own story of survival, and witnessing their trust grow over time was a truly grounding experience.
Caring for Pigs
Caring for the pigs was one of the most rewarding parts of my time at Moo to Ewe. Each pig had its own personality, some playful, some shy, and others delightfully stubborn. My role included feeding, cleaning their enclosures, and making sure they had plenty of enrichment time. It was heartwarming to see how intelligent and affectionate pigs can be when given the love and care they deserve. I would often get cuddles from one of the residents – Boston.
Caring for Sheep and Goats
The goats and sheep were endlessly entertaining, curious, cheeky, and always ready to investigate anything new. Looking after them involved daily feeding, cleaning, and helping with basic health checks. Despite their mischievous nature, they were incredibly social and affectionate, reminding me that even the smallest acts of care can make a huge difference.
Caring for Chickens and Ducks
Caring for the chickens and ducks gave me a new appreciation for the individuality of birds. From collecting eggs, to later feed back to them, to refreshing their water and ensuring they had safe, dry spaces to rest, every task felt meaningful. Their routines may have been simple, but their interactions and little personalities made every morning and evening feel bright.
My Soft Spots
I’ve loved cows my entire life, and for my 20th birthday, I visited Moo to Ewe, and instantly fell in love! That experience inspired me to start volunteering, and of course, the cows were my absolute favourites. Their gentle, calm presence made every visit special, and I often stayed back after the morning rounds just to sit with them, cuddle, and enjoy those quiet, grounding moments. Those experiences not only deepened my connection to the sanctuary but also reinforced my passion for animal welfare and the importance of kindness in everything I do.
However although my love for cows is deep rooted in me, I quickly found another favourite, the pigs! Boston in particular, he would often play and cuddle with me, and was simply the sweetest thing ever. There was many occasions that he would ‘scratch’ on my legs until I would give him scratches and cuddles all over.
